Public Sector Emerging Leaders Program
Overview
The Public Sector Emerging Leaders Program is a tailored qualification for the sectors future leaders who demonstrate high career potential and commitment. The program incorporates the Diploma in Government (Management) PSP51104 and has been designed to provide outcomes specific to the Public Sector focusing on career progression and providing unmatched opportunities for participants to expand their professional network whilst attaining key skills and competencies.
It is the aim of the program to provide strategic, personal and operational outcomes through applied learning, through case studies and actual work-based projects.
This is a unique opportunity for the promising leaders of the future to gain a head start in their Public Sector careers.
Outline
Presented over 14 days between February and November 2010 the program will be structured to focus on public sector issues and the needs of emerging leaders employed in government agencies.
The diverse and stimulating curriculum will be delivered using a variety of methods including:
- Introductory sessions for participants
- Courses, interactive seminars and self-directed study
- Assessment activities, including work-based projects
- Group tasks and group presentations to selected external panels and forums
- Networking activities organised by IPAA

The program will cover various formal competencies including:

- Use Complex Workplace Communication Strategies (PSPGOV512A)
- Promote Compliance With Legislation In The Public Sector (PSPLEGN501B)
- Monitor And Maintain Workplace Safety (PSPOHS501A)
- Manage Performance (PSPGOV519A)
- Manage Budgets And Financial Plans (BSBFIM501A)
- Manage Conflict (PSPGOV508A)
- Develop and use Political Nous (PSPGOV515A)
- Facilitate Change (PSPGOV514A)
The program will also include a tour of Parliament House, a project presentation day and Public Sector specific skills covering:
- Understanding the Mechanics of Government
- Better understand the role and processes of government in Australia,
- Assess and analyse current issues in public administration
- Ministerial Correspondence Writing
- Have a greater understanding of what a Minister requires from responses prepared by agency staff.
- Be able to identify the different types of ministerial responses
- Gain an understanding of how to draft a ministerial response by reviewing real case studies
