IPAA: A Network of Strength
Mentoring

Mentoring is a relationship which gives people the opportunity to share their professional and personal skills and experience, and to grow and develop in the process. It is based upon encouragement, constructive comments, openness, mutual trust, respect and a willingness to learn and share.
Spencer, “Mentoring Made Easy”, 2004.

With the ability to reach across organisations and jurisdictions within the Public Sector, IPAA is perfectly placed to facilitate Mentoring Programs at all levels.

The IPAA Mentoring Program has been running successfully for several years giving individuals the opportunity to be matched with a partner from across the Public Sector as a confidential sounding board.

Overview

IPAA strongly believes that mentoring is an effective method for the transference of professional, technical and management skills.

Mentoring benefits all participants:

  • Mentorees - through skill development and realisation of their potential
  • Mentors - through knowledge transfer, recognition and personal satisfaction
  • Organisations - chiefly in increased retention of employees.

Framework

  • This is a Mentoree driven program, where Mentorees are responsible for developing and articulating their goals.
  • Mentorees will be invited from across the public sector in South Australia.
  • Mentors will be invited from across the public sector in South Australia.
  • Successful Mentors and Mentorees will be selected by IPAA, according to the quality and integrity of expressions of interest received.
  • Only Mentorees will have a say in who their matching mentor is.
  • The program will run for 11 months (February to December 2010).
  • Training will be provided for both Mentors and Mentorees at the commencement of the program.
  • Each pair will enter into an agreement for the duration of the 11 month period.
  • IPAA will act as a facilitator, hosting training and providing support by attending the first meeting and by providing guidelines and information as required.
  • Beyond December 2010, mentoring pairs will be responsible for continuing on their own, as agreed between mentor and Mentoree.

Program Aims

  • Provide across government networking opportunities for participants
  • Build capacity of participants through knowledge transfer, skill development and building networks
  • Support participants in clearly identifying their goals
  • Provide participants with the tools and support to measure these goals
  • Develop career-long relationships

What past participants have said...

I think this (program) fills a valuable gap that many departments can’t or don’t offer...
I have enjoyed and been stretched – there were many interesting and complex issues that arose for the Mentoree during the year and I think we handled them well together.
